## Approval belongs to a specific product

### Ask for the product and its label

Ask which use the product was approved for. Then ask how that relates to your reason for care.

Calling a product a peptide does not mean the FDA has approved it, under US rules checked September 2026.

The US drug agency is the Food and Drug Administration, known as FDA.

Semaglutide (Wegovy) is an FDA-approved peptide medicine, as of September 2026.

FDA: the approved Wegovy label

## Made to order does not mean approved

### Ask why it is made to order

For a medicine prepared to order, ask why it is under consideration and what change would be made for you.

Compounding is making a medicine to meet a patient’s particular needs.

US law allows compounding under set conditions, as of September 2026.

For compounded medicines, FDA says it does not check quality, benefit or potential harm before sale, as of September 2026.

When an approved product cannot meet a patient’s medical need, compounding can meet that need.

Examples include a dye allergy in a ready-made medicine or a patient being unable to swallow its tablet.

FDA: made-to-order medicines

Copies have limits

Neither semaglutide nor tirzepatide injections remain on FDA’s national shortage list, as of September 2026.

As of September 2026, federal law limits pharmacies making copies of medicines already on sale repeatedly or in large amounts.

For one named patient, a change can be an exception if the person ordering the medicine finds an important medical difference for that patient.

Ask that person to record what changes in your medicine and why it matters for your health.

That finding does not remove the other rules for making a medicine to order.

A cheaper price alone does not qualify as that medical difference.

## A drug product number does not prove approval

### Ask which proof is being offered

If an offer shows a seal, logo or product number as proof of approval, ask for the record behind it. Ask what that record proves about this exact medicine.

In a government list of drug products, the product number is called a National Drug Code, or NDC.

Being on that list does not mean FDA approved the product, as checked September 2026.

FDA: what a product code means

Retatrutide and cagrilintide are drug ingredients discussed in the FDA’s warning about weight-loss products.

As of September 2026, FDA says neither ingredient is in an approved medicine or has been shown safe and effective for any condition.

As of September 2026, FDA also says federal law bars either ingredient from use in medicines prepared to order.

## Make the evidence answer your question

### Check who was studied

Was the study in people? Did those people have the concern being discussed?

### Check what was tested

Did it test this exact product and form? Ask your treating doctor or other health professional to explain the result in plain words.

### Check what remains unclear

What did the study fail to answer? What could make the findings a poor fit for my care?
